Gen Z is Getting Fired – How You Can Capitalize On It
Jan 22, 2025Have you been hearing all about how GenZ is getting fired months after being hired?
The good news is, they means they are getting hired! As a professional development coach that tells me that they have strong qualifications, a fresh perspective, and an impressive sense of self-presentation in their interviews. However, according to Forbes, the biggest reasons behind the high rates of early termination trends are lack of motivation , poor communication (language), and struggles with work-life balance.
But here's the good news: If you are a Gen Z reading this and these are all areas you can leverage in your interviews and work on in your professional development journey to secure a position, learn from the mistakes of your fellow Gen Z ‘cousins’.
Like it or not Gen Z Has a Reputation!
As a member of Gen Z, you may not realize it, but this age group is often unfairly stereotyped. Many employers and colleagues have preconceived notions about the work ethic, communication skills, and professionalism of younger generations. This reputation can sometimes hold you back, even if you're highly qualified and motivated.
It’s easy to think that your qualifications and personality will win over the professional world but to truly stand out in the workforce and gain the respect you deserve, you’ll need to go against the grain and actively work on developing a reputation (a personal brand) that exemplifies professionalism, responsibility, and maturity. This is the key to overcoming stereotypes and showing that you are a well-rounded, reliable professional.
Reputation building is about consistently demonstrating that you can handle responsibilities, communicate effectively, and show up when it matters. By focusing on building a personal brand that reflects these qualities, you can shift the narrative and show your worth beyond the generational labels.
Developing Your Personal Brand
Set yourself apart in the most positive way through consistency. Here are three key tips that can help you excel and stay on track to success:
It’s Not Just About Showing Up, It’s About Delivering
Showing up goes beyond just arriving on time. It’s about reliability and respect for others' time. Whether it’s showing up to meetings or handing in assignments, always make it a point to meet deadlines and honor commitments. When you say you’re going to do something, follow through. This doesn’t just show that you’re reliable – it builds your professional reputation as someone who can be trusted. Employers and colleagues alike value someone who can manage their time effectively and meet expectations consistently. By developing this habit, you demonstrate not just professionalism, but also a high level of personal responsibility.
Develop Your Vocabulary – Communication is Key
It might seem like a small thing, but improving your vocabulary can have a huge impact on how you’re perceived at work. The ability to articulate your thoughts clearly and thoughtfully shows that you’re serious about your work and can communicate with intention. Start by reading more – not just articles or social media posts, but books, journals, and articles that challenge you to expand your vocabulary. Practice writing better emails that are concise, polite, and professional. It might seem like a small effort, but this simple step will make you stand out as someone who communicates effectively and with purpose. The way you speak and write reflects your level of professionalism, and by developing this skill, you make it easier for others to take you seriously in any work environment.
Work-Life Balance – You Are in Charge
Work-life balance isn’t about finding a perfect equilibrium between your job and personal life – it’s about setting strong boundaries and taking control of your time. When you’re at work, make sure you’re present and productive. Don’t just fill the hours – maximize them. Stay focused, take initiative, and demonstrate that you’re fully invested in the work you’re doing.
However, once your workday is over, make sure to protect your personal time. You have the right to set boundaries with your employer regarding work hours, especially if the company is pushing you beyond what’s agreed upon in your contract. Be proactive in understanding the flow of work and don’t hesitate to communicate when you feel that your workload is becoming overwhelming. A balanced life is one where you manage your time effectively and stand up for yourself when needed. The key is being responsible for your own well-being and setting clear expectations with your employer. This approach not only helps you maintain your sanity but also shows that you can manage both your personal and professional life with confidence.
Gen Z may be facing unique challenges in the workforce, however these are not insurmountable.
By building a strong professional brand – one rooted in punctuality, communication, and balance – you can set yourself apart and build a reputation that lasts. Remember, you have the power to shape your career and ensure that you are seen as someone who is not just qualified but also a reliable, articulate, and balanced professional.
