Your hands get clammy and your heart is pounding. Those nerves are coming and you aren’t sure what to do?
Everyone has been there. Before a speech or interview, maybe something simple like meeting someone you admire. It happens to us all. So what can we do to calm our nerves?
Visualize
This can be helpful before a speaking engagement, interview, or audition – Visualize yourself calm and ready – visualize success!
Think about a time when you were successful in the past and things went just the way you wanted to. This will help you to tap into that confident energy from a past event.
Mantras or Affirmations
- Having mantras and Affirmations are a powerful way to get your mind off of your nerves and onto the positive outcome you would like.
- I am calm and confident.
- People like to listen to what I have to talk about.
- I am capable of delivering an engaging speech.
Practice Deep Breathing
Breathing is so important. It is so simple that sometimes we forget that the simple task of taking a deep breath through our nose all the way into the abdomen and letting it out through the mouth will physically release the stress you are feeling and allow you to gain more control over your nerves.
Keep Perspective
Remember that everything is a learning experience. This is just a step on your path to success, so use it to learn and grow through your experiences. This perspective helps to take some of the pressure off of the situation and allows you to gain control of your nerves.
What do you do to center yourself? Do you have any affirmations that you would like to share that you find helpful for claiming your nerves? I would love to hear them.
I do hope that you have found this helpful for staying elegant when your nerves are getting the best of you.
